Great reminder, Martha! Most of the complaints you listed can be avoided by communicating more often and in more detail with clients. If a client understands why you are billing a certain way, what value you are providing and that you are there to help the client meet their needs, the client will be more likely to stick with you for the long run.

We recently did a radio show on how to get work done during the holidays, and during that show we also talked about ways to stay connected with clients during the holidays. I think this show relates to your blog since many attorneys may have trouble communicating consistently and effectively with their clients during busy holiday seasons when they may be spending a lot of time out of the office and struggling to keep work and life balanced. Check it out here for more info.

I also think that your thank you notes should not come off as generic or fill-in-the-blank style. My mother always told me growing up to never begin a thank you note with the words "thank you." Instead, try to be a little more creative and personal when expressing gratitude. It's easy to jot down "Thank you for ____." But it really shows gratitude and sincerity when you can move away from common phrases and expressions.

Those are all great tips on how to listen, Martha. On the flip side, sometimes attorneys need to direct their clients' attention to the key facts in order to get the information they need in the limited amount of time they may have for the initial consultation. Do you have any tips on how attorneys can listen while also keeping time and tasks in mind?

Martha- These are really great tips. I think that one thing that holds attorneys back from talking about notable cases or notable clients is the extra legwork it takes to get their clients' permission or the feeling that they are "exploiting" their client (as you mention). Can you think of ways attorneys can ask permission to show these things and get good responses from their clients? In other words, how can attorneys convince clients to give them testimonials or use of their name/case for the law firm's marketing materials?

I agree that attorneys should use their strengths to their advantage, but often many attorneys who are seeking coaches are looking specifically for ways to network more effectively, rather than already possessing the ability to network effectively. What are some other strengths that attorneys may already have, and how can they use those strengths to better their practice?

Great point about giving your office a make-over. I think that this applies also to your personal appearance and your website (especially if you have a virtual office). Sometimes it is the small things that will make or break a client relationship. Your office, appearance, online presence, etc., should be designed to attract the kinds of clients you want and to make those clients feel comfortable.
