Are Daily Distractions Hurting Business Development?
It's normal to get caught up in the daily bustle of phone calls and e-mails, but when that bustle begins to take time away from your business development efforts - well, then... there's a problem.
Here are some ways to stop distractions from driving your day:
1. Shut the door.
Shutting your office door sends a message to your colleagues that you are focused on your business. Your practice comes first, your staff second. Perhaps if they can't reach you they will take the initiative to solve their problems on their own.
2. Stand up when someone comes into your office.
This means that your visitor can't sit down and most people will get tired of standing and leave when their business with you is done. If someone is lingering a little too long, come around your desk and walk them out the door. At that point you can excuse yourself and head back to your office.
3. Limit e-mail and social media checking.
How often do you check e-mail, Facebook, or your cellphone? Do you take your own calls or leave that to an assistant? Every one of these is pulling you away from your practice. Schedule specific times to address these outside issues so that you have uninterrupted time to do your real job.
4. Clear your space.
Clear your work area of visual distractions. It's so easy to catch sight of something that will only take a couple of minutes and stop working on the big stuff to address the little things.
5. Make and post a list.
Lists are so important in helping people stay on cue. Jot down everything you need to get done that day and post it right where you can see it. By keeping your list within your field of sight you can also keep it top-of-mind.
