Practical Ways to Exude Confidence
I'm going to let you in on a little secret. Partners, executives, and managers do not know exactly what to do in every situation. The truth is many of them make it up as they go.
Think about it. Even executives need weeks or months to get a handle on things when they join a new firm or are promoted to a new position. In the mean time, they still need to look and act the part.

And, that's where these tips come in.
Here are some ways you can come across looking confident, even when you're under pressure.
1. Less is more.
Sometimes we have a tendency to ramble on when we are questioned by someone in authority. We do this because we are trying to get some sort of positive response.
When it comes to acting like you know what you're doing, less is more. Give a brief answer, look that person straight in the eye, and wait. More often than not, they'll give you the same look back, judge your level of confidence, and say, "Fine."
Remember: The more you say, the more uncomfortable you'll sound and the less confident you'll look.

2. Do your research.
Want to make a good first impression? Do your homework. If you're taking a new position in a firm, spend some time with people who have been there before. Ask them what they would do in your shoes. Doing this will allow you to walk through the door with a plan. It also shows initiative and commitment that you took time to prepare.
3. Never let them see you sweat.
New situations are scary, and it's human nature to be afraid of the unknown, but the truth is that the way you feel isn't necessarily evident to anyone else. Stop worrying about how you look and sound.

4. People love a sense of humor.
People are attracted to humor and humility and, for some reason, it makes you seem more confident and capable. Also people will cut you way more slack if you show a little bit of interest in them and don't take yourself so seriously.
