Compensation Up for In-House Division General Counsel
Report Spotlights Big Hikes in 2010
It pays to be a middleman.
A recent salary study published by Corporate Counsel shows in-house division general counsel received a 8.35% boost in median total cash compensation last year compared to their corporate counsel colleagues.
The median salary for general counsel: $226,400.
The median bonus: $78,000.
The median total cash compensation: $292,000.
According to Corporate Counsel, compared to last year, those figures represent a boost of 8.79% in salary, 4% in bonus, and 8.35% in total cash compensation.
In a related story, Corporate Counsel says 2010 was "a terrible year to be the little guy." In-house positions without management responsibilities saw the biggest drop in wages last year, with attorneys seeing the biggest decrease.
Non-management attorneys saw their salary drop by 5.4%, their bonuses drop by 4.5%, and their total cash compensation drop by 6.6%. The median total cash compensation for the attorney position was $119,800.
The data collected for these surveys came from 208 corporate law departments. Almost 75% of their companies generated revenues of $1 billion or more.
